Meryl: I just found your website and I love it. One of things that drew me here is not only your books, which I'm anxious to get (just ordered) but also your love of animals.
I've written three romances and I use animals in mine too. I have two goats (as pets) and three dogs. Just about 13 days ago, we rescued a dog like your Redd, who was one step from death. He was shivering and huddled in a ditch, filthy, and I knew from one look I had to help him.
He's still skittish but he's becoming more comfortable every day. He had the bowl fear too, but he's doing much better now. Still, it breaks my heart to think anyone could ever neglect a living creature this way. We took him to the vet for shots and such. The vet believes he's no more than 6 months, and his breed is Great Pyrenees and probably Lab. He's 55 lbs but underweight for his age. He's gonna be a very very big boy.
He has an appointment to be neutered the 18th. My biggest problem is that he's terrified of the leash. I had to pick him up (55 lbs worth!) to get him to the vet the first time. I'm hoping in the next week or so, I can accustom him to the leash, to make vet trips easier. Bless his heart, he just huddled to the ground in fear.
